Why we choose fermented skincare

The new Activated Toning Mist is alive. How so? Well, it’s filled with beneficial pre-, pro- and postbiotics, which all address your skin’s microbiome. They are the result of fermentation, a technique we love for its health-enhancing properties. In a previous Maiwe article about the skin’s microbiome, we explain how a complex ecosystem of billions of bacteria and yeast is keeping your skin protected from inflammations and infections such as redness, eczema and acne. It’s only natural that your skincare should support that protective barrier, and that's exactly where fermentation comes in!

Inspired by the health benefits of fermented foods and drinks on the gut microbiome, our goal was to extrapolate those benefits to the surface of your skin. Fermentation is a naturally unpredictable process, dependent on many external factors such as temperature and a complex interaction with the other natural actives in the formula! But we never gave up. Over two years and eighteen test runs later, the formula merged into a coherent, excellent Toning Mist.

"There are a number of benefits that result from fermentation, but the most important are the balancing of the microbiome, the creation of new ingredients, increased potency of ingredients, increased penetration of ingredients into the skin, and increased preservation of the final skincare product."

But why do we value fermentation so much? And what happens exactly when you’re fermenting?

To start with, fermentation is a process that employs microorganisms like yeast and bacteria to break down skincare ingredients into smaller molecules so that they penetrate deeper into the skin and are absorbed better.

The fascinating part is that not only does fermentation increase the potency of its ingredients, it’s also helpful for the skin microbiome as fermentation results in pro- or postbiotics in the form of peptides, acids, and enzymes, which help to support the skin barrier and as a result reduce the potential for skin inflammation and sensitivity!

The new Mist actually enhances your entire skincare routine. Science shows that the fermented ingredients and the other ingredients you’re applying are absorbed better by the skin, as the microbiome is more supported. Think of kimchi, sourdough bread or kombucha. Our gut digests these foods way better than their non-fermented counterparts, and as the gut microbiome becomes more balanced and enriched with good bacteria, it has a positive effect on your entire digestive flow. It works similar for the skin.

Another benefit that matches Maiwe’s DNA perfectly, is the compatibility with the most sensitive skin types. Fermented products are commonly used for their anti-inflammatory and skin-calming benefits, making them especially useful for those with inflammatory skin conditions like eczema, dermatitis, rosacea or acne.
